How to play Spades – Card game rules

  • 1
What are the rules for playing spades?

Spades is a four-player game that uses a standard 52-card deck (with the Jokers removed). The deck is then shuffled and dealt, with each player receiving 13 cards.

Game goal

The object of Spades is to be the first to get rid of all the player’s cards to a discard pile.

Spades game uses 52 deck cards for 5 or less players and 104 cards for more than 5 players.

Ranking of cards: 8 (50 points); K, Q, J (court cards 10 points); A (1 point); 10, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2

This is one of the best card games to play with your friends and family.

Game overview

Spades was first introduced in America in the 1930s and has remained popular over the years. Spades was only popular in America for many decades until the 1990s, when it began to gain international fame and appreciation thanks to online spades play and tournaments. The game is usually played with four players, but there are also versions for three, two, and six players.

Four players | Traditional Spades

THE SPADES SETUP:

Players who have been partnered should sit across from one another. A standard 52-card deck is required, and the game will be played clockwise.

HOW TO PLAY:

Select a dealer at random, and the deal will then rotate clockwise from there. The dealer deals to the left until all of the cards have been distributed and each player has 13 cards in hand.

WHERE TO BID:

Players must make a bid once they have received their cards. The goal is to determine how many hands you believe you can win. Taking a trick refers to winning a hand. Partners must decide how many tricks they can take as a team and submit that number as their bid. To receive a positive score, partners must match or exceed their bid. There is only one round of bidding, and everyone must participate. Partners in leisure play can discuss how many tricks they believe they can take before settling on their official bid, but they cannot show each other their hands. There are only 13 total tricks that can be performed in a single game.

Nil – A player who bids nil declares that they will not win any tricks. If successful, this type of play earns a bonus; if unsuccessful, it earns a penalty. The player whose partner bids nil is not required to bid nil.

Blind Nil – A player can choose to bid nil before ever seeing their cards. This action is known as a blind nil, and it comes with significant bonus points if completed successfully. After everyone has bid, the player who bid the blind nil can exchange two face-down cards with their partner before the game begins. A common rule of thumb is that unless a team is losing by 100 points or more, a blind nil cannot be bid.

Players decide how many points they need to win before the game begins. A score of 500 points, for example, is common for a game, but you can set any goal you want. The player to the left of the dealer is the first to go. If possible, the other players must follow the suit of the first card. If a player is unable to follow suit, they may play a trump card (also known as a Spade) or any other card of their choice. Spades online cannot lead until they are introduced as a trump card to the board. Unless the suit was trumped by a spade or joker, the player who played the highest card of the suit played wins the trick. The player who won the trick is the one who throws the first card of the next round. The goal is to win as many tricks as you can bid on. The game will go on until all of the cards have been played.

HOW TO WIN:

Players receive 10 points for each trick bid and 1 point for each trick over that bid. For example, if a team bids 7 tricks and wins 8, they will receive 71 points.

When a team wins more tricks than they bid, as in the previous example, the extra trick is known as an overtrick or a bag. According to popular belief, if a team reaches 10 bags, they must subtract 100 points from their total score. This adds to the game’s interest by motivating players to win the exact number of tricks that they’ve bid on.

A team receives 0 points if they are unable to meet their bid at the end of a round. For example, if a team bids on five books but only receives four, they receive no points and instead -10 points for each book bid.

If a player’s nil bid is successful, his or her team will receive 100 points. If the nil bid fails, the nil bidder’s trick counts as a bag for the team and does not count towards the partners’ bid.

A blind nil earns 200 points if successful and loses 200 points if unsuccessful.

Whoever gets to the total number of determined winning points first wins!
